Meerschaum Pipes
Meerschaum pipes are widely appreciated for both their beauty and quality. Meerschaum is a white, clay-like mineral that has several characteristics that make it very desirable for pipe making. Meerschaum is porous, does not burn and is quite soft.
The porous nature of meerschaum is important because it allows the pipe to actually absorb the flavors, tar and oil from the tobacco that is smoked in it. This causes the pipe to eventually become colored overtime, which is one of the most rewarding aspects of owning and using a meerschaum pipe. The coloring adds a special sense of individuality to each pipe, since no two coloring schemes are the same. The coloring process takes place over time as the oil and tar absorbed by the pipe is pulled to the surface by its wax coating. The more the pipe is smoked, the darker and more colorful it will get. To achieve optimum pipe coloring, it is recommended to smoke the meerschaum for a period of two weeks, and then let it rest for approximately a month to give the colors a chance to come out.
Another important characteristic of meerschaum is that it does not burn. This quality helps to provide a very pure smoke since the only thing burning is the tobacco. Meerschaum pipes also do not require that a cake be formed like a traditional Briar pipe does. A cake is basically a layer of resin that forms from previous smoking sessions. When smoking a Briar pipe, the cake burns as well as the tobacco, which can cause a problem if you enjoy trying different variations of aromatic tobaccos because their flavors could be compromised. Meerschaum pipes eliminate this problem, which is what makes them perfect for the pipe smoker who is always looking to try new blends.
The softness of meerschaum allows for the pipes to be carved by hand very easily, resulting in some truly exceptional designs. While there are some pipe enthusiasts who prefer a simple bowl design for main purpose of coloring and smoking, there are others who are drawn to them primarily for their ornate carvings. The highest quality meerschaum pipes are carved from a solid block of the mineral, usually mined from very deep deposits. The deeper the it is found the better, because the characteristics that make it ideal for pipe making are better persevered.
The use of meerschaum for making pipes dates back to the early 18th century, and some pipes from that time still remain un-smoked today because they are seen as such great works of art. The meerschaum is truly the king of pipes, providing its smokers with a sense of both tradition and elegance.
