Meerschaum Pipes: A Pleasure To Own And Smoke
Meerschaum pipes are crafted from a soft, magnesium silicate called meerschaum. This mineral is similar to sea-foam and is mostly found in certain parts of Turkey. Because it can be carved easily, it is considered to be one of the finest materials for making pipe bowls and cigarette holders. It has been used for this purpose for more than 300 years, and today, these pipes continue to be popular.
The best pipes are carved by hand from a solid block of high-quality meerschaum. After selecting a stone, the carver uses age-old carving techniques to create intricate designs, smooth shapes and unique motifs. After carving, the item must be allowed to dry, and it is fitted with a custom-made stem and polished with wax.
There are various reasons why meerschaum pipes are preferred over pipes constructed of other materials such as corncob or briar. A major reason that consumers favor meerschaum is the fact that this mineral does not affect the flavor of the tobacco. Consumers can smoke different kinds of tobacco with this pipe because, unlike wood, the mineral does not lend its own aroma or flavor to the smoking tobacco. If cared for properly, meerschaum pipes can last for decades. This type of pipe must be cared for and handled carefully because it can chip, break or crack easily. What are good pipe brands to buy?
I would like a price range under 200 dollars.But I want a good pipe to smoke. I like briar and mershum and I know merschum is more expensive. Please advise.

It really depends on personal taste in my opinion your better of with a briar as they tend to last longer, as for buying a Meerschaum pipe they tend to be quite fragile and unless you buy one from Turkey where the best Meerschaum comes from (also very expensive) you will end up a cheap pressed Meerschaum pipe or African Meerschaum which is of inferior quality when compared to Turkish Meerschaum. The best brand in my opinion is Peterson or Black Star both of which have been in business for a long time and are well priced. Check out www.peterson.ie
