Choosing Among Smoking Pipes
There are many who still enjoy good smoking pipes from time to time. Pipes are mostly about relaxation and in some cases personal style. Pipes are the one smoking accessory that is just as much about the device as it is the smoking. Furthermore, many people prefer the aroma of a pipe to that of a cigarette and sometimes a cigar. If a pipe is your preference, then you know that there is an art and science to pipe smoking.
Finding the right pipe is an important first step in pipe smoking. Many beginners may start out with a corncob pipe because they require no breaking in as most other styles. They are the least expensive models available usually costing less than $10. However, corncob pipes do not offer much in the way of variety with only a couple of styles from which to choose. A beginner may also choose an Estate pipe that has been previously owned so it is already broken in. Of course they are cleaned up before they are sold from usually anywhere between $20 and $75.
Those who are more experienced with smoking pipes understand that a pipe is a very personal thing, so choosing one is a matter of aesthetics, price and quality. How a pipe looks affects the way you feel about it; if you do not like the way the pipe looks on you, you will probably not like it. It is important that you like how the pipe makes you look, so you need to try it out much in the same way as you would try out a new pair of sunglasses. You also need to keep in mind that different styles will smoke a little differently.
Price will be a factor in the decision you make about your pipe; however, it will not be the most important factor. You will probably be most concerned with how well the pipe smokes. If you have a strict budget, you need to look at all the available models in your price to check them for major mechanical flaws. You can eliminate those that do not meet your aesthetic and mechanical qualifications.
In fact, the most important factor in smoking pipes is the pipe's overall quality. A quality pipe will have the right draft hole, fill, filter, finish, grain, part alignment and weight. You will need to check your pipe for each of these elements to make sure it has all the right qualities to give you a good smoke. You will know when the pipe looks good and holds together well enough to create the relaxation experience you want. You can then get a pipe you will enjoy for years to come.
